What is the Amundi Evian Championship?

The Amundi Evian Championship, held at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France, is not only the sole major golf tournament held on the European continent but also a focal event in women’s golf. First held in 1994, it joined the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour in 2013, becoming one of the five major championships in women’s golf. Over the past thirty years, this championship has built a rich history, becoming a unique event.

In 2024, the championship celebrates its 30th anniversary. Sponsored by Rolex, the event has evolved from a small tour event to the fifth major of the LPGA Tour, becoming a landmark event in women’s professional golf. To avoid clashing with the Olympics, this year’s tournament is held earlier in July, attracting numerous world-class players.

Supporting Asian Players and Young Talents

The Amundi Evian Championship has consistently supported Asian and young players by providing translation services and accommodation arrangements, and inviting Asian media for coverage. Vice President Jacques Bungert stated, “Golf is developing rapidly in Asia, with outstanding performances from players in China, Korea, and Taiwan. We hope they feel at home here and encourage them to participate in more European events.”

Environmental Measures and Facility Enhancements

The tournament’s environmental measures have also gained widespread attention. The venue uses large detachable tents to avoid the impact of permanent structures on the environment, and spectator seating is fixed only with ground stakes to reduce land pressure. Additionally, the use of chemical cleaners is prohibited at the venue, all tap water is treated through an in-house sewage system, and seeds beneficial to the soil and climate are developed to ensure environmental sustainability.

Rolex’s Pursuit of Excellence and Social Responsibility

Since becoming a partner of the Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1980, Rolex has been committed to promoting the development of women’s golf. Each year, Rolex presents the “Award for a Better Tomorrow” through this event, recognizing individuals and organizations contributing to the improvement of human life. This year’s award goes to “Tennis King” Roger Federer and his foundation, which provides educational support in Southern Africa and Switzerland to help impoverished children take control of their futures.

History and Future Prospects of the Tournament

Reflecting on the past 30 years, the Amundi Evian Championship has evolved from a small event into a prestigious major, a journey filled with challenges and opportunities. Jacques Bungert emphasized, “We are always striving for excellence and continuously exploring ways to enhance the quality of the competition.” In the future, the tournament will continue to focus on environmental sustainability and player development, aiming to become not only a sports event but also a model for cultural exchange and environmental practice.

During this special anniversary celebration, Rolex and the Amundi Evian Championship are not only celebrating past successes but also laying a solid foundation for future development. They look forward to bringing more surprises and achievements to women’s golf in the years to come.
